A sentimental education is a unique act that has the protagonist Daniele Canonico, a man of fifty years, native to the South, who tells his story to the public. An average man, who narrates his personal formation. The entry into the ‘world of males’, since he is a child, the protagonist reveals a rough path full of obstacles, traps, put to the test and continuous and tiring virility tests. Following the stages of his life, first school and then working, he outlined through a brilliant monologue the layout of a child, then of a boy, finally of a man, called to demonstrate to the world his ability to be male.
It is a human comedy path, in which Daniel traces everything he has crossed. The need to get engaged in elementary school. The theory of honor, the defense of the reputation of female figures of the family. The puberty and comparison of attributes with friends. The need to have a woman who respects you.
Until Daniel, now an adult, married, with a teenage daughter, has to face the evidence of maturity. And this is where the story changes in tone, and offers us a flipped perspective. How much this sentimental education has condemned him to misunderstanding.
But all this Daniel doesn’t know. At most he can guess, but in his tears of misunderstanding for what he did of his life, he has no answers.
“I have conceived sentimental education as a funny text, which only in the last ten minutes is revealed for what it really is, an act of accusation against a social education of genre that never points to respect for the woman as a subject.
The tragedy of a ridiculous man, as many, and as many capable of acts that cannot control.
I wanted for this test an actor not only superb, but capable of empathy with the public.
And I asked Giuseppe Fiorello to accompany me on a theatrical adventure that at this historical moment has the characters of necessity and urgency”.
