Saturday 18 July, from 18.30, Salerno becomes the capital of university sports: at the start of the European Universities Games 2026. Appointment in Piazza della Libertà for the Opening Ceremony: the monumental square on the sea will host the inaugural event, which will have as its theme the “Mediterranean”, intended as a historical bridge of peace and dialogue between cultures.
From 18 July to 1 August 2026, the territory of Salento will host the eighth edition of the multisports exhibition of the tip of the
EUSA (European University Sports Association): European Universities Games (EUG) first arrive in Italy and choose Salerno as the heart of European academic sport.
Under the direction of EUSA (European University Sports Association), and the guide of the Organizing Committee composed by the University of Salerno, the CUS Salerno and the ADISURC- Regional Company for the right to university study, with the support of FederCusi and Campania Region, the event will transform the city and its province into an international stage of sports, competitions, inclusion, fair play and intercultural exchange, in the sign of the official claim of the event: “Passion never ends“.
The event has extraordinary numbers that tell of a great organizational machine and an unprecedented continental participation: more than 4,000 participants are expected, coming from about 40 countries and about 400 universities.
The imposing sporting event will be distributed in a two-week span of 15 sports facilities, strategically located on the territory, including the Campus of Fisciano and Baronissi.
The city of Salerno will be the heart of the event, the nerve center of social, cultural and ceremonial life of the Games. The capital will offer to the event its urban spaces and city beaches, in an unprecedented connection between sport, sea and local history. Squares and public spaces of Salerno will be activated to accommodate athletes and citizens in dedicated entertainment areas, transforming the evenings of the city into a widespread feast full of socialization and sharing. The event is a showcase for unprecedented development and tourism promotion for Salerno, projecting the image of the city across Europe and ideally combining its ancient scientific-cultural tradition with the energy of the future European university.
These are the disciplines planned: badminton, basketball, basketball 3×3, beach volleyball, football, football at 5, padel, handball, beach handball, volleyball, rugby at 7, tennis, table tennis.
