In my 50 years of theater I interpreted 7 his plays, first with his blessing, then with that of my friend Luca, who so much misses me and the Italian theater, and now thanks to Thomas who so lovingly and with great competence administers the immense heritage. And so, at 72 years, a year less than Eduardo had then, I realized the dream of interpreting “The Mayor”, the comedy he was more tied to, as he confessed to Sergio Lori many years ago.
We immediately clarify that the chamorra with “The mayor of the Rione Sanità” has nothing to do with it. Antonio Barracano is “a man of honor” who for most of his life had dedicated himself to composing dissides, administering a form of justice alternative to that of the state, a state that condemned the innocent and often had no mercy. His character was inspired by a truly existed man: his name was Campoluongo. But let Eduardo talk. Symbolic, political, almost didactic, but in my opinion he claims to be faced with a breast, sinking his hands into evil, suffering and sometimes in blood. But not tragic comedy: there are some of the most beautiful jokes of the author. There is in this comedy the most beautiful stage exit of an Eduardian character: in Vicienzo ‘o Cuozzo who begging forgiveness asks him the hand, Eduardo-Barracano responds, while as in a Greek tragedy goes to die out of scene, “No, ‘hand no’. For 52 years, that line has increased my heart’s beats and reminds me of what “The Great Theatre””.
