In one of the richest places in history of Salerno, in what was probably theForum of the Roman city, the palace that houses theState Archives, seat in the Lombard era of houses and churches today disappeared. Here was built a palace in the Aragonese era, which incorporated theChurch of San Ludovico, recently made available to the citizen with its beautiful frescoes.
For centuries this palace was the seat ofDirected by, that is, of the court of Salerno, and this destination was preserved with the advent to the early nineteenth century of the Napoleonic kingdoms and then by the Criminal Court, which in the Bourbon period defined the criminal court. Only with the construction of the Palace of Justice at the Corso Vittorio Emanuele in 1934, the destination of the building became the current one.
The most famous process was that aimed at the surviving protagonists of the expedition of Sapri, with the death sentence, switched to life, of Giovanni Nicotera, the nearest collaboratorCarlo Pisacane.
TheHeritageof the State Archives of Salerno is very rich: about100 thousand pieces of paper documentationand more thana thousand parchments, in addition to onelibrary of about twenty-four thousand volumes. Periodically they are organizedexhibitions and eventsthat show some parts of the heritage, which inevitably concerns, alsofinds from the Salernitana Medical School, including some degree degrees.
