The most important urban intervention of the city is certainly the redesign of the sea front. The maritime station designed by the architect Zaha Hadid (1950/2016) – one of the most luminous Archistars in the world – is an essential component of this redesign, which unites the port with the Lungomare through Piazza della Liberta.
Located on the Manfredi Pier of the commercial port, the structure is an architectural intervention of the highest quality, in a scenic place, overlooking the city, close to the Amalfi Coast, open all over the Gulf of Salerno.
The mobile and sinuous forms of construction, an oyster with a hard shell, characterize this work that marks a relationship between sea and sky. The soft lines and a system of stairs, of walks open to the vacuum, give to the construction that character of fluidity that is accentuated by the coverage in colored ceramic tiles (a tribute to the local tradition of ceramics), which at night lights in luminous leds.
The maritime station must play a key role in the development of harbour tourism, opening the city to tourists who land here and who will be able to access the city promenade through Piazza della Liberta. Today the structure is also used for events and events.
