Written at the beginning of the nineties and interpreted for the first time in Italy by a memorable Marcello Mastroianni in the 1995-1996 season, The last moons of Furio Bordon is a masterpiece of the theater of the last century, considered – like no other coevo theatrical text – a real classic.
The dramaturgical work – loved by the public and critics, translated and published in many languages and staged in more than 20 countries – involves and excites in a very poetic way, but also painfully sincere, the theme of the fragility of old age.
After Mastroianni’s extraordinary test (Premio Ubu and IDI as best actor), the role of the protagonist was supported in a radio edition by Gastone Moschin and again at the theatre by Gianrico Tedeschi, who made his battle horse between 2000 and 2010.
Now The last moons finally return to the Italian stage thanks to a new production of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia directed by Paolo Valerio, and to an interpreter, Alessandro Haber – a very great success in the sveviano The conscience of Zeno, always for the direction of Valerio – who will surely give unexpected depth and nuances to the old, ironic and moving protagonist.
The powerful and at the same time delicate, refined and true writing of Furio Bordon – an excellent author from Trieste, rewarded and followed both in the context of narrative and dramaturgical production – brings the audience to a world full of emotions, familiar and intimate dynamics, all shared and able to deeply touch.
An elderly professor awaits in his room the arrival of his son, who will accompany him in the nursing home where he chose to settle, to leave more room at home to his grandchildren. During this wait, surely full of restlessness and melancholy, he dialogues with his wife, or rather with the memory of his wife, who died many years earlier. It is a conversation full of tenderness and memories, of sweet punzecchiature, but also of idling truths: old age, fear of death, the cold perspective of shelter for the elderly, the axieme of tenderness and disappointment towards the son who did not know – or perhaps wanted – to make it resist from his intent. The detachment unfortunately will happen, and the conclusion in the hospice will be in the sign of a serene surrendered to the flow of time and life.
