Six characters in search of author

Six characters in search of author

by: Luigi Pirandello

Direction and Adaptation: Nicasio Anzelmo

With: First Reggiani, Jane Alexander, caste to be defined

Based on several previous narrative texts from Pirandello, “Six characters in search of author“is an absolute leader of italian and world dramaturgy.

The story is consumed on a stage where a theatrical company is experiencing a show. The sudden entrance of six strangers interrupts the works: these are characters abandoned by their author, who desperately ask the Capocomico to give life to their unfinished drama. Among the general skepticism, the six begin to tell their tormented family history, marked by misery, sinful unions and tragic events.

When the actors of the company try to stage that story, the characters rebel: they do not recognize themselves in the imitations of the professionals, judge false compared to their eternal pain. The work thus transforms itself into a powerful reflection on the boundary between reality and fiction, demonstrating how “personality” is immutable and real, while the human being continually changes masks, fragmenting his identity.
