Extended description

Sant’Andrea is one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings of the Salento Middle Ages, attested already in the 9th century. The Lavina stream, one of the many waterways that descend from Mount Bonadies, flows under the road and gives its name to the church.

The church is a stratification of three different buildings, the oldest of which is buried more than six meters below the level of the present and features traces of ancient frescoes depicting the four Archangels.

A higher level, of the 10th century probably, has other lacerts of frescoes and a Greek writing.

The current level is of the 12th century, with still traces of frescoes, as well as decorations of the Baroque era.

A high bell tower flanks the church and had to rise over the entire ancient city. Its current configuration with ogival arches is of

Gothic plant.
