Mercatello Park

Inaugurated in 1998 by President Scalfaro, the Mercatello Park, one of the largest in Europe, is a real green lung in the eastern part of the city.

Extended description

Recently built, the Mercatello Park, with its 10 hectares of extension is considered one of the largest parks in Europe

in relation to the number of inhabitants. Important green lung located in the eastern part of the city the park is frequented by the citizens of Salento who find themselves to relax, walk or do sports.


The park has four theme areas:
“natural area”, along the stream Mercatello that flows into the pond;
“area of the Mediterranean garden”, characterized by majolica columns covered by climbers;
“Orchard area”, with citrus trees;
“Lawn area”, a vast grassy clearing.


Inside the park you can visit rock garden, where there is the greenhouse that houses a collection of oily plants, among the richest in southern Italy.


Every year, along the roads that border the park takes place the fair of the Crucifix, one of the most ancient events in Salerno.
