Rise of the Panno di San Matteo 2026
An exact month separates us from the feast of our Patron Saint.
On August 21, the city of Salerno renews one of its most felt and identity rituals, officially starting the celebrations for San Matteo.
Between Faith, History and Tradition
the culminating moment of the ceremony sees the exhibition of the famous drape at the atrium of the Duomo.
The phrase «Salerno is mine: I defend it!», according to tradition, recalls the miraculous protection of the Saint who in 1544 saved Salerno from the attack of Saracen pirates unleashing a storm at sea.
The great “panno” depicts the Apostle and Evangelist with the pen and the Gospel in his hand, flanked by the angel and the image of the city, witnessing a secular bond that unites the entire community to the Patron Saint.
