Extended description

TheComplex of the Church of Addolorata and the Monastery of Santa Sofiahas an ancient history. The monastery dates back to the 9th century and therefore is ofLongobard origin, as the name of the Church of Benevento and the imperial church of Constantinople, dedicated to the Saint of Knowledge, also bears witness.

After several vicissitudes, the Jesuits arrived in Salerno in 1500 and settled in the monastery, building the church in the forms in which we see it today. The beautifulstaircasewhich gives access to the church, is proof of the spectacular intent characteristic of the Counter-reformation and of the vocation to the sacred representation of the Jesuits. The whole square is highly scenic, in one of the characteristic places of the Roman city, identified by someone like the place of the Forum, and certainly the departure of the street leading to Nocera.

Today the church is used as a place ofcultural eventsand exposure. The interior is enriched bymural paintingsof the 16th and 17th century.

The ancient monastery of the 9th century was first male and then female, under the jurisdiction of the Badia Benedettina di Cava. Today the building, overlookingwide Abate Conforti,is characterized by two factory bodies united by a passage with a garden.

On the façade of via Trotula de Ruggiero aperforated quadriphore of interlaced arches, attributable to the 13th century.

Since 2018 a section of the complex hosts theInnovation Palace,a co-working space for start up, business and private.

The Church of Addolorata is open for exhibitions and cultural events.

The name of the Addolorata is of the 19th century, when the church passed to the brotherhood of the same name.
