IGardens of Piazza Matteo Lucianiwere realized at the same time at the Villa Comunale and are surrounded by three road axes that give the green area a characteristic triangular shape.
In the middle of the garden stands thebust of Matteo Luciani, realized in 1937 by Pasquale Avallone. Matteo Luciani was thefirst mayor of Salernoafter the Unity of Italy, and built theVilla Comunaleand theTeatro Verdiin addition to starting an important processurban renewalthat favoured the rebirth of the city.
The artist seems to focus on the details of the face, succeeding in fully grasping its deepest and intimate expressive humanity. Interesting is the bronze bas-relief with the statue, in which the living dynamicity of the figures is realized on the intersection of horizontal and vertical lines as it is precisely in some works of the Avallone dated around this period.
Behind the Theatre and just outside the fence of the Villa Comunale are small but prettyGardens of Piazza Umberto Icharacterized by a central oval-shaped flowerbed, lush vegetation and some benches.
