TheRiver Irno is part of the identity of Salerno so much that for some historians gave the name to the city (probably it is true the opposite).
Along its shores, in the stretch that crosses the city near the mouth, have arisentwo natural parks, with different characteristics, but equally rich in green, of open spaces to the public, of services.
TheIrno Parkoccupies the area of an old brick factory – theSalid– and is a crossroadsindustrial archaeologyOf spaces for cultureOfbotanical garden. An absolutely original and fascinating crossroads. The chimney of the factory is visible from afar and starts from the base of the old oven, destined today to host exhibitions and events in an extremely suggestive environment. The mill millinstead hosts theGhirelli TheatreHeadquartersFondazione Salerno Contemporanea.
The Irno Park then has a botanical space structured on seven thematic gardens, well kept and cared for: the “garden of the centenaries”, the “garden of medicinal plants”, the “garden of roses”, the “garden of fruits”, the “garden of aromatic plants of the Mediterranean”, the “garden of the magnolias”, the “garden of citrus fruits”.
The adjacent park “Terme Campione” takes its name from an ancient spa that stood in the area, is commonly called“Parco Pinocchio”for the presence of a bronze statue of Pinocchio, made by the artistAntonio Petti. The main entrance is highlighted by amonumental fountain, by apergola di glicini, from palms and from a system ofartistic lighting.
The park develops along a main avenue from which all secondary routes are branched, giving access to the lawn and the area for free activities. In the center of the green oasis, a greatamphitheatrewhich hosts events and animation activities for children and a building with a perfectly integrated architecture to the surrounding environment with arestaurantanda multifunctional roomfor various activities.
Pinocchio, 140 years old and doesn’t prove them! The artist Antonio Petti created, in the Pinocchio Park of Salerno, a bronze sculpture that portrays a proud Pinocchio, joyful that invites people, and in particular children, to cross the park and to discover its history through the polychrome mosaics that reveal in part the pavement of the area, rendered in a magical white/black that reminds itsfamous drawings full of imagination and extranianti allusions. Nature and Children correspond to him, as they always did, playing among the tiles of a story where joys, shadows, sorrows and desires represent the life of everyone. A Pinocchio guardian of the green, the game and the dreams that seems to thank his Master “gepPetti”. Angela Rosati
