Along Via dei Mercanti, the main artery of the ancient center, you can admirePalazzo Pinto, where the noble family of Norman origin dwelt until the 20s of the last century. Located in the past of the Provincial Library, the building today houses thePinacoteca Provinciale.
In front, a few steps from Virtual Museum of the Salernitana Medical School, locatedPalazzo Carrara, characterized by an architectural structure typical of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, but of sure antecedent construction. The palace is known for hosting San Francesco di Paola and a plaque reminds us of the event. Later, going up via Duomo, you will meet one of the most important buildings in the historic centre of Salerno.
Located in front of the entranceCathedral,Palazzo Giannattasio has a baroque façade with three floors, refurbished several times in the 17th century and in the 18th century and inspired by Neapolitan architecture. The coat of arms of the Giannattasio family, originally from San Cipriano Picentino, which bought the building in the second half of the eighteenth century, is visible on the door.
A few steps from the Duomo, along Via delle Botteghelle, you can see the beautiful entrance ofPalazzo D’Avossa, characterized by a marble arched structure containing the coat of arms of the house. The building has a series of arches and hanging structures that combine different buildings and a refined balcony, decorated with six marble busts overlooking via merchants.
Upholstering the alley Adelberga leads to an area, called Antica Corte, where Areas IIbuilt a majestic RearWhen he decided to transfer the capital from Benevento to Salerno. Of this magnificent building, probably extending from the Barbuti to the Vicolo Pietra del Pesce, today only the hypogeum and the Palatine Chapel remain.
Rejoining the alley of the Barbuti, moving on the right side of the square of the same name, climb the steps of the picturesque alley Gisolfo II. On the left begins via Tasso with thepalacebelonged to the noble familyLauro Grotto, in which an intact 18th century chapel was found. Continuing on the same road, where the noble and most important families lived between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, is the imposingPalazzo Ruggi D’Aragona, considered one of the most suggestive buildings in the area. The building, which today houses the “Soprintendenza for architectural and landscape goods for the provinces of Salerno and Avellino” has a partially baroque style, but its origins are certainly antecedent, having housed in 1555 Emperor Charles V. The main attractions are the entrance with the high-quality waterfall marble staircase and the monumental Neptune Fountain in the courtyard.
Even later, lifting the look, you can see the pretty windows decorated with stucco Palazzo Conforti, historical residence of roco style built in the years between the first and the second half of the eighteenth century. On the second floor, the noble floor, there is a hanging garden with a central fountain, the apartments are decorated with precious paintings.
Walking along the nearby Via Trotula de Ruggiero, with a detour towards Via S. Massimo, visitPalazzo S. Massimofounded, together with the annexed church, by Prince Guaiferio between 861 and 865. Despite the 18th century appearance of the façade, the building retains a medieval part in its structure, with some elements that can be traced back to the classical history and to the early Christian and Carolingian. After various passages of ownership and changes of destination of use, unfortunately the palace is located today in a state of abandonment.
Continue on via Trotula De Ruggiero in the directionGarden of the Minerva, there is the palace belonging to the familyCopeta, built in the first half of the eighteenth century on the area of the ancient cemetery of the convent of S. Maria delle Grazie and S. Bartolomeo. Placed in an unmissable panoramic position, the palace is characterized by an interesting chromatic game of decorations of times and walls, based on the alternation of white and red. Going up, in Largo Scuola Medica Salernitana is locatedMartuscelli Palace.
Returning to the lower part of the old town, taking the Lavinia alley and descending the Gradoni Madonna della Lama you will arrive in Largo Campo, where not far from the famousPalazzo Genovese, locatedPalazzo Bottigliericharacterized by a majestic entrance portal in tuff surmounted by a mask.
