Villa Avenia takes its name from its former owner, Dr. Saverio Avenia, an illustrious doctor who lived there in the nineteenth century.

Remembered again today for its generosity and great humanity,Dr. Aveniahe opened his house in the Octocemto to accommodate anyone who needed continuous care, at a time when the city had no health facilities for long decency.
He had chosen this site of the historic center for its particular location between the sea and the hills that made ita particularly healthy place, exactly as centuries before – for the same reasons – it wasMatteo Silvaticoto elect this area of the city to cultivate medicinal medical herbs that made famous theSalernitana Medical School.
The garden, previously belonged toMonastery of the Holy Spirit, founded in 1235 by the “Venerable order of San Damiano”. The nuns built aaqueductwho needed all the gardens in the area. Their aqueduct captured water from the sources of the Acquarola (the source is also called San Leo) which is located upstream of the village of Canalone. This aqueduct, partly survived still today brings water to the gardens of the area.
The monastery was closed in 1572. The nuns were transferred toMonastery of San Michele.
The garden can be reached via Tasso and past the arch that recalls the ancientdoor of Ronca.
The road that leads to this area is called Spinosa and is a pretty cobblestone surrounded by walls that protect gardens and gardens. The name recalls the “pumpous pierus” that once covered the area.
Turning towards the sea is “Tower of thieves“. It is said that the corpses of the executed were hanged on to its members.
Along the Via Spinosa, you reach a small square where there is a building that borders on the left side with a small garden. This was theMonastery of the Holy Spirit.
