San Matteo 2024

Presented at the Salone degli Stemmi of the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Salerno the program for solemn celebrations in honor of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, Patron Saint and Protector of the city of Salerno.

To illustrate the calendar of appointments, the Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, H.E. Monsignor Andrea Bellandi with the Cathedral Parish, Don Felice Moliterno: “The celebrations for our Patron Saint are a precious occasion, this year, to draw on reasons of renewed hope, in a time so serious of shadows and anxieties for the future, caused first of all by the dramatic conflicts that occur especially in the Landsanta and Ukraine. – observed the Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, H.E. Monsignor Andrea Bellandi – Devotion to St. Matthew, so strong in our people, can instill in all of us the certainty of a look of love – the same that Jesus addressed to our Patron, calling him to be his apostle – who never disappoints and never abandons us, thus giving us the strength and enthusiasm of being artisans of peace”, added H.E. Monsignor Bellandi.

The same Archbishop dwelt on History linked to the Patron Saint: “Risale al 954 after ChristThe date attesting the arrival of the relics of San Matteo in Salerno. So this year – 2024 – are 1070 years that our city guards the remains of the Holy, although only around 1080 were officially found after a long period of hiding and were then placed in the place where they are still, to honor which it was then built the current Cathedral, consecrated in 1084 by Gregory VII, or 940 years ago.

Always in a year ending with number 4, or 27 June 1544 (480 years ago), it was an attempt to attack and plunder the city of Salerno by the Saracens, led by the Turkish pirate Khair-ed-Din, called Barbarossa. Assalto failed by the burst of a storm attributed, according to tradition, to the intercession of our Patron Saint, called by the people of Salento refugee in the Cathedral preventing his miraculous intervention.

As a sign of gratitude, the coat of arms of the city was embellished with the figure of St. Matthew which with the left hand holds the Gospel and with the right blessing. From then on, the Salernitans pledged to lead in procession every year, 21 September, with great solemnity, the statue of the Patron Saint.

It is therefore a long history that founds the devotion of the people to the Apostle and Evangelist Saint Matthew. This year – in addition to the prayer addressed to the Saint to protect and watch over our city and our Archdiocese (Matthew, together with Donato and Antonino is one of his Patrons) – we have a special prayer intention to address to St. Matthew: that for peace in Ukraine and in the Landsanta”.

13 September

At 8 p.m., at Piazza Flavio Gioia there will be the traditional floral homage of the City of Salerno to its Patron Saint, with the official opening of the festivities in honor of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, in the presence of Archbishop Andrea Bellandi and the civil and military authorities.

At 7 pm at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Mons. Pasquale Cascio, Archbishop of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia, will preside over the Holy Mass with the participation of the parish communities of Forania Salerno Est, animated by the Corale “S. Pietro Apostolo” of Montecorvino Rovella.

19 September

At 7 pm at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Mons. Roberto Repole, Archbishop of Turin and Bishop of Susa, will preside the Holy Mass with the participation of the parish communities of the Forania Salerno Ovest-Ogliara, animated by the Corale Sacro Cuore of Jesus of Bellizzi directed by Giovanni Moscariello.

20 September
At 19, at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Msgr. Andrea Bellandi, Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, will preside over the First VespriCapitals of the Solemnity of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist in the presence of the Superiors and students of the Metropolitan Seminary “John Paul II”. Sante Messe: At 6.30 | 7.30 | 8.30 at the Crypt of San Matteo. At 7.00 | 8.00 at the upper Basilica. At 10.30 at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Mons. Andrea Bellandi, Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, will preside over the Solemn Pontificale on the occasion of the Solemnity of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist animated by the Choir of the Diocese of Salerno. The homily will be held by Fr. Massimo Fusarelli, OFM, Minister General of the Order of Minor Friars.

At 18, the traditional Procession will take place in the streets of the center of the simulacists of St. Matthew, St. Joseph, St. Gregory VII, St. Gaius, St. Ante and St. Fortunato. In particular, the Procession will travel via Duomo, via Mercanti, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, via Adolfo Cilento, Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, via Roma, reaching the Teatro Verdi, passing via Portacatena, Largo Campo, via Da Procida and then via Mercanti, arriving at the intersection with Via Duomo to go back to the Cathedral. Expected stops at the Guardia Finanza barracks, in Piazza Dante for the Blessing on the sea and at Palazzo di Città.

At 11 o’clock visit of the relics of the Holy at the Hospital “San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona” in Salerno, San Leonardo.

17 September
At 11 o’clock visit of the reliquia del Santo at the Casa Circondariale “Antonio Caputo” in Salerno, Fuorni.

18 September
At 11 o’clock visit of the relic of the Saint at the Campolongo Hospital in Eboli (SA). At 17 a visit to the relics of the Saint at the headquarters of Salerno of the Order of Commercial Doctors and Accounting Experts, Via Roma 39.

19 September
At 9.30 a.m. visit of the relic of the Holy to the Guardia di Finanza at the church of San Giorgio, Salerno. Floral Homage of the City.

Among the most famous cultural events promoted by the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, the Matteane Days: two events taking place within the cycle of solemn patronal celebrations. The event, organized by the Diocesan Office for Culture and Art, will be held at the Atrium of the Cathedral with the title “The Church, house and school of fraternity (Mt 18, 1-35)”, for a current and urgent reflection on the Church’s commitment on the Synodal Road and universal welcome. The meetings will be presided by H.E. Mons. Andrea Bellandi; the evenings will be presented and moderate by Fr Vincenzo Serpe, Professor in charge at the Theological Institute Salernitano, and by Professor Lorella Parente, Director of the Office for Culture and Art.

18 September
At 8.15 p.m., the first meeting of Matteane Days. Interventions: “Mt 18: keys to reading for an always current speech” edited by Mons. Ermenegildo Manicardi, Biblista, Vicar General of the Diocese of Carpi; “The face of the Synod Church: for a Church listening to all” curated by Prof. Vito Mignozzi, theologian, Dean of the Apulian Theological Faculty.

19 September
At 8.15 p.m., the second meeting of Matteane Days. Interventions: “The reconciled fraternity. From the AT to the Gospel of Matthew” curated by Prof. Antonio Landi, Biblista, professor at the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome; “The universal fraternity and the service of the church” curated by H.E. Mons. Roberto Repole, theologian, Archbishop of Turin and Bishop of Susa.

EVENTS

14 September
At 8 p.m., the concert “Venturini 50th” is scheduled at the Atrium of the Cathedral. As a father in his son” with M° Bruno Venturini on the occasion of the 50 years of artistic career.

14 and 15 September
At the Arena of Santa Teresa, the CONI – Regional Committee Campania and the Circolo Canottieri Irno organize the Palio Remiero San Matteo:
– 14 September from 9.30, open day start and qualification Palio di San Matteo Schools. At 12.30 pm, finals and awards and, to follow, at 15, open day and qualification Palio San Matteo Parishe, with finals and awards at 16.
– 15 September from 10 am, the Palio of the bearers of the Saints will be held and to follow the award, at 12.30 pm.

15 September

At 20.15, at the Primary Cathedral will be held the organ Concert in honor of the Patron Saint with the M° Gian Vito Tannoia.

16 September

At 19, at the Atrium of the Cathedral, the event entitled “Le Campane della Cattedrale di Salerno in the 200th year of fusion of its Campanone” (1824-2024) with the intervention of Don Luca Franceschini, Director National Office for Ecclesial Cultural Heritage and Housing, Rosa Fiorillo, Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Salerno, Michele Vespasiano, journalist, Ermenegildo Guerra and Paolo Campanino Guerra. Finally, guided listening to the eight bells of the Cathedral. The initiative is organized by the Italian Association of Campanology, in collaboration with the Centro Storico Pastoral Unit and the Office for Culture and Art of the Diocese of Salerno.

17 September

On the occasion of the feast of the Patron Saint, the doors of the Cathedral open for a very special guided tour. “On the traces of Matthew: one night in the Cathedral“: this is the title of the event organized with the collaboration of the Erchemperto Association and with the participation of Catholic Action, of the Agesci, as well as of the Community of the Pastoral Care Center Historical Unit.
Below is the program:
– at 18 guided tours for children and children;
– at 21 hours guided tour for adults.
