It was held 9 September 2025, at the Salone degli Stemmi of the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Salerno, the presentation of the solemn celebrations in honor of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, Patron Saint and Protector of our city.
To illustrate the calendar of appointments, the Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna- Acerno, H.E. Monsignor Andrea Bellandi with the parish priest of the Cathedral, Don Felice Moliterno.
“Celebrating our Patron Saint Matthew is a great opportunity to return to the authentic origins of our ecclesial and town identity. – observed H.E. Monsignor Andrea Bellandi – This year, then, Solemnity intersects with the Jubilee Year that we are living and thus represents a further stimulus to be Pilgrims of hope, in a historical moment, like the present one, burdened by conflicts and future worrying horizons. But, as Pope Francis said, no one can steal our hope!“, the Archbishop concluded.
Sunday 14 SEPTEMBER
On the occasion of this year’s patronal feast, the venerated silver statue of the Patron Saint Matthew (1691, Neapolitan silversmith Nicola de Aula) will be solemnly placed in one of the most important side chapels, the one in the left aisle called “Cappella della Pentecoste”, belonging to the Lembo family, the richest from an artistic point of view, designed by the famous architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, with the sculptures of Bottia The goal is to offer the precious envelope of the Patron Saint – a veritable work of art preserved in the Museum of the Treasure of St. Matthew – to the veneration of the faithful in an exclusive space that will be richly decorated by a company of specialized bodybuilders. After many decades, the silver envelope will also be placed on an ancient golden base that will allow the image to take a prominent position, especially during the sacred procession. In the chapel of the Pinto Family, also set for the occasion, will be placed the compatron Saints: Saint Joseph, the holy martyrs Salernitani Gaio, Ante and Fortunato and San Gregorio VII. In its usual place, that is, on the presbytery, will be placed, instead, the precious relic of the arm: the ideal and real symbol of the patronage of the evangelist who “defenses” our city.
At 8 pm, at Piazza Flavio Gioia there will be the traditional floral homage of the City of Salerno to its Patron Saint, officially opening the festivities in honor of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, in the presence of Archbishop S.E. Monsignor Andrea Bellandi and the Civil and Military Authorities.
THURSDAY 18 SEPTEMBER
At 19, at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Mons. Orazio Soricelli, Archbishop of Amalfi – Cava de’ Tirreni, will preside the Holy Mass with the participation of the parish communities of the Forania Salerno Est, animated by the Corale Sacro Cuore of Jesus of Bellizzi, directed by the M° Giovanni Moscariello. The Holy Mass will also see the participation of the Sportians by the Pastoral Office Sport and leisure.
FRIDAY 19 SEPTEMBER
At 19, at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Msgr. Angelo Spinillo, Bishop of Aversa, will preside the Holy Mass with the participation of the parish communities of the Forania Salerno Ovest-Ogliara, animated by the Corale “S. Pietro Apostolo” of Montecorvino Rovella, directed by M° Grazia Petrosino.
Saturday 20 September
At 19, at the Primary Cathedral, H.E. Msgr. Andrea Bellandi, Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, will preside over the Solemnity Mass of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist animated by the Coral “Schola Cantorum Matthaeana” of the Cathedral, directed by M° Ermenegildo Guerra.
At the tomb of the Apostle, the Rite of the harvest of manna will follow.
Sunday 21 September

At 11 o’clockCardinal Angelo De Donatis, Penitenziere Maggiore, will preside at the Solemn Pontificale on the occasion of the Solemnity of St Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist animated by the Choir of the Diocese of Salerno, directed by M° Remo Grimaldi and the chorales of the parishes of the city.
At 6 pm, the traditional Procession will take place in the streets of the center of the simulacrums of San Matteo, San Giuseppe, San Gregorio VII, San Gaio, Sant’Ante and San Fortunato. In particular, the Procession will travel via Duomo, via Mercanti, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, via Velia, Via S. Benedetto, Via Giovanni Cuomo, Via dei Principati, via Cilento, Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, via Roma, arriving to the Teatro Verdi, passing via Portacatena, Largo Campo, via Da Procida and then via Mercanti, arriving at the intersection with Via Duomo to climb to the Cathedral. This is the path agreed between the bodies set up and submitted to the evaluations of the Prefect. Expected stops at the Guardia Finanza barracks, in Piazza Dante for the Blessing on the sea and at Palazzo di Città.
22 hoursAt the end of the procession, the Holy Mass will be celebrated at the Crypt of San Matteo.

At 9.30, visit of the Reliquia del Santo to the Guardia di Finanza at the “Vincenzo Giudice” barracks in Salerno.
At 11 am, visit of the Reliquia del Santo at the Casa Circondariale “Antonio Caputo” in Salerno – Fuorni.
At 17, visit of the Reliquia del Santo at the headquarters of Salerno of the Order of Commercial Doctors and Accounting Experts, in via Roma 39.

Among the most famous cultural events promoted by the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, there are Matteane Days: two appointments in the cycle of solemn Patronal festivities. The two days, entitled “Many crowds followed him and cured them all” mt 12,15b, organized by the Diocesan Office Culture and Art, will be held at the Temple of Pomona of Salerno. The meetings will take place H.E. Msgr. Andrea Bellandi, Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, Professor Lorella Parente, Teologa and Director of the Pastoral Office for Culture and Art, Dr. Tonia Willburger, Municipal Councillor, already Councillor for Culture and Dr. Giovanni Minucci, President of the Social Cooperative “Il Tulipano”.

At 17.30, the second meeting of Matteane Days. Interventions: • “Proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom and healed every disease and infirmity” Faith, healing and sequela in mt 8-9 by Prof. Antonio Landi, Biblista; • “A great pastoral challenge: the social and ecclesial inclusion of people with disabilities” by Dr. Fernanda Cerrato, Head of the Catholic Church – UCR Catechesis to people with disabilities. At the end of the event, there will be a guided tour of the Crypt of San Matteo del Duomo di Salerno by Cooperativa Sociale Il Tulipano (Free admission and free for conference participants.

Temple of Pomona – Exhibition “The Paths of the Sacred” – gestures and rituals of faith in contemporary photography, from 13 September to 12 October. Curated by Micol Forti and Alessandra Mauro. In collaboration with Teatro Garibaldi in Modica and in partnership with Cultural Association for the Fondazione Tempi Moderni.

At the Arena of Santa Teresa the CONI – Regional Committee Campania and the Circolo Canottieri Irno organize the Palio Remiero San Matteo: from 10 am to 13, previewed the participation of the bearers of the Saints.
On the occasion of the feast of the Patron Saint, the doors of the Cathedral open for a very special guided tour. “The way of pilgrims: one night in the Cathedral” is the event organized with the collaboration of the Association Erchemperto, of Catholic Action, of Officina Dinamo and with the participation of the actors Brunella Caputo, Davide Curzio, Salvatore Albano and the choir “Il Calicanto” of Maestra Silvana Noschese. • Tuesday 16th at 21pm adult guided tour • Wednesday 17th at 18pm guided tour of children

At 8 p.m., at the Primary Cathedral will be held the organ concert in honor of the Patron Saint with the M° Lorenzo Bonoldi, Organista titular of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

TRANSPORT PROVISIONS
On the occasion of the Patronal Feast of St. Matthew next September 21, in order to allow the performance in safety of the traditional procession, from 16:00 and until the end of the celebration will be activated the following traffic devices:
– Landing of Lungomare Trieste at the height of the “Casa del Combattente”; the vehicular traffic coming from via Sandro Pertini and from the exit of the parking lot of Piazza della Libertà will have to walk via Giuseppe Odierno and turn left on Lungomare Trieste, in the direction of I.C. Bar, until the intersection of Piazza Umberto I, where you can turn both left on Via Luigi Centola (direction via Porto/via Ligea) and right on via Stanislao Lista (direction Piazza Matteo Luciani).
– Getting rid of Via Roma at the height of the intersection with Via Arturo De Felice; the vehicular traffic coming from c.so Giuseppe Garibaldi will have to turn right on Via Arturo De Felice.
The vehicles above 3.50 m from Via Torrione will not be able to take G. Garibaldi but will have the right turn obligation in the underpass of Via Diego Cacciatore.
The buses and trucks of a height not exceeding 3.50 m will be able to continue on c.so G. Garbaldi until the intersection with Via SS. Martiti Salernitani, with an obligation to turn right on this last road.
– Boating via Velia at the height of the public lift to Piazza Principe Amedeo; the vehicular traffic will be routed along Via Alberto Pirro, to be traveled west-east for the entire length to Piazza Ventiquattro Maggio.
– Boating in Piazza Ventiquattro Maggio; the vehicular traffic coming from via dei Principati and from via Alberto Pirro will have to converge on via Francesco Paolo Volpe.
– Boating along via Gian Vincenzo Quaranta; the vehicular traffic coming from Piazza Caduti Civili di Guerra will have to turn right along via Giovan Angelo Papio.
– Via Giovanni Cuomo will also be completely closed to the viability; therefore the vehicular traffic coming from via San Benedetto and via Porta Elina will be restored only at the end of the religious manifestation.
